The Skincare Edit

It pains me to type this out.. but until around 6 months ago, I didn’t have a skincare routine. Well, I didn’t have a good skincare routine that was actually beneficial for my skin type.

I definitely have to say that I am in no way shape or form blessed with beautiful skin. My skin type is combination/oily that is often prone to pore clogging and spots (sigh). I also have a fair share of acne scarring from those wonderful spotty teenage years that my 20 year old self is now in the process of eliminating – cue the AHA exfoliants and rosehip oil!

This basically means that I need a routine that keeps my excess oil production at bay, ensures that any dry patches are moisturised and also helps to diminish my acne scarring – and for the warmer months, I think I have found my superstar products.

Let’s start out with my morning skincare routine:

Recently I’ve stripped this routine down to two products only, a cleanser and a moisturiser.

The Ren ClearCalm Clay Cleanser

Just quickly.. a pro tip for anyone prone to breakouts and acne: NEVER use a foaming cleanser. The skincare goddess Caroline Hirons will explain here.

Literally a day spa in a bottle, this cleanser makes me feel so super fresh and cleansed after use in the mornings. It’s a clay based cleanser, using French Kaolin Clay that absorbs excess oil and purifies the skin. It’s designed to help out with acne prone skin caused by excess sebum production and contains ingredients such as Chamomile, Lavender and Sage to help calm inflammation. My recommendation is to only use this product once a day as I found that using it morning and night dried out my skin a little bit – but it’s the perfect morning cleanser in my opinion!

The Elemental Herbology Moisture Milk Ultra-Light Facial Hydrator

The perfect moisturiser during the hot months for oily/combo-oily skin! It is also one of the only moisturisers that I have found on the market that doesn’t contain Dimethicone – a silicone ingredient that will always clog my pores and break me out whenever I apply a skincare item on my face containing it, read all about why it’s harmful to your skin here.

It’s literally what the name suggests, an ultra-light facial hydrator. It definitely forces moisture into my skin but it’s incredibly light weight, almost like a serum kind of consistency making it the perfect product to sit underneath makeup and to endure that summertime heat. Jam packed with antioxidants, vitamins and minerals, it also acts as a great barrier against environmental damage.

My night time routine:

When taking off your make up, double cleansing is something that everyone should be doing in their night time routine – again, Caroline Hirons preaches how important it is here.

For my combo-oily skin, the perfect cleansing product that I have found to double cleanse with (1. take off makeup with, 2. cleanse the skin with) is the Elemental Herbology Harmonising Cleanse Facial Cleansing Oil. It gets rid of every ounce of make up and dirt on my face every time without fail and leaves the skin feeling soft, supple and fresh. It will never leave my skin feeling stripped of its natural oils (important for oily skin!) and is an absolute pleasure to use. It’s an oil, therefore it’s incredibly calming on the skin and preps me perfectly for bed time after a good ol’ facial massage.

Next up I use two products every other night on rotation. The first one I use in replacement of a moisturiser is the Trilogy Certified Organic Rosehip Oil. Like I mentioned previously, I steer clear of most moisturisers because I only know of a couple that don’t contain Dimethicone (clogs pores!) and because I have oily-combination skin, using a natural oil in replacement of a moisturiser is exactly what I need to balance out my excess oil production, Rosehip oil is also going to help me fade away my acne scarring.

The second product that I use on rotation with the Rosehip Oil is something that I have only been using for a couple of weeks and it’s my new skincare obsession: the Alpha-H Liquid Gold resurfacing facial treatment. With Glycolic Acid (an AHA) being the main ingredient, the product works overnight to exfoliate and purify the skin to help it appear brighter, to diminish fine lines and to improve the overall complexion in general.

My Mum and I have both been using it and we have noticed some pretty radical changes in the appearance of our skin. After only a couple of days, Mum had already noticed that her pores and wrinkles appeared tighter and less defined, meanwhile I have noticed a HUGE improvement in my acne scarring and my overall complexion in general. A wonder product in my opinion!

These 5 products are working skincare miracles for me at the moment and will work perfectly for anyone with oily or combination oily skin, but even the driest of skin types could definitely enjoy the benefits of this routine.

Make sure you double cleanse!!!!!!!!!!!!!
