Summer beauty: A natural, everyday make up look

By the time Summer comes around, most of the time I like to ditch the make up. The season definitely supports the ‘au naturel’ look by all means and with a day time climate so hot that foundation slides off your face almost instantly, what would be the point in applying it in the first place?

Usually I stay away from wearing any type of make up on a day to day basis during this particular time of the year, but sometimes there are occasions where it is more appropriate to appear a little bit more ‘put-together’ – occasions such as family barbecues, a friend’s 21st birthday brunch or an afternoon out with the girls to share a jug of Pimm’s and lemonade where we are in need for an easy, lightweight and (as natural looking as possible!) makeup look.

The base:

It’s hot, we want our skin to breathe and we don’t want to be prancing around in full coverage on a beautiful summers day. The best base product that I have come across in the last year for a light coverage is the Bare Minerals Complexion Rescue, a tinted hydrating gel cream. The product’s consistency is exactly what its name suggests: a hydrating, lightweight gel/cream formula that evens out the complexion, hides any redness but is still sheer enough to look natural by not quite covering up freckles, spots or scarring (We must embrace our imperfections! Especially if we’re going for a natural look – as you can see in the image above, you can still see my acne scarring on my right cheek). I find that it’s best applied with your fingers as this warms up the product and pushes it into your skin instead of it sitting or caking up on the face.

Brighten up that under eye!

Let’s be real, Summer means late nights, lack of sleep and the dark eye circles and under eye bags are present. My favourite product to highlight underneath my eyes and on the high points of my face is the Estee Lauder Double Wear Brush-On Glow BB Highlighter. Being a concealing highlighter it adds a little bit of coverage as well as brightening up the skin, but the formula is still incredibly lightweight and never seems to cake up on my face no matter how much product I apply – the perfect item to help achieve a natural looking glow.

Moving onto powder.

Setting your base with a powder is crucial when it’s hot outside to lock in the foundation and ensure that it stays put, as well as keeping the unwanted shine at bay. These days I prefer an all over luminous complexion instead of matte, but I still like to set my entire face with powder before moving onto bronzer and blush.

To achieve this I use a powder that sets the base and mattifies but still maintains and all over glow – so you could say it’s partially matte, but has a mostly luminous finish. The product I use is the Charlotte Tilbury Air Brush Flawless Finish Powder. It’s incredibly finely milled so it will never look cakey and is fabulous for setting the under eye area to prevent creasing.

Next up is my favourite beauty product of all time: Bronzer.

Every time I do my make up whether it’s a natural day time look or a full coverage night time look, I feel as though my face doesn’t quite come to life until I apply a generous amount of bronzer.

I have a few favourites, but the one that I always seem to reach for in the summer is the Bobbi Brown Bronzing Powder in Golden Light. This particular bronzer always applies evenly, never patchy and can be built up to give the ultimate bronzed beach babe look. Golden light is the perfect colour for me in the summer when I’ve got a bit of a tan going on and it has just the right amount of warmth to its colour so that it will never make you look orange (a major win for someone like me who loves to go overboard!).

A little bit of colour can really bring your face to life – I will forever and always be a blusher girl and I really think it can make a huge difference to a makeup look.

What colour is more fitting for this kind of look other than peach? None. I am obsessed with M.A.C’s Peaches, not only because of its colour, but because it isn’t overly pigmented which allows for easy application as well as giving the cheek a sheer wash of colour resulting in a more natural look.

Highlighter has got to be my second favourite beauty product, illuminating the high points of the face (cheek bones, tip of the nose, brow bone) to bring out your inner glow.

If you’re a frequent youtube beauty channel watcher like I am, you will be well aware of the absolute perfection that is the Becca x Jaclyn Hill Shimmering Skin Perfector in Champagne Pop.

Please tell me… is there a highlighter more beautiful than this? Aside from Becca’s renowned highlighting powder formulation, Jaclyn Hill did an exquisite job creating a perfect blend of peachy/champagne and gold. Lucky for us ladies in New Zealand we can now have access to purchasing this product ourselves online from Sephora NZ.

Summer is when I get lazy with my brows.

A structured brow always frames the face beautifully and often completes a look – but doesn’t always look natural. For this reason I tend to put my ABH brow wiz to the back of my make up storage and stick with a brow mascara to run through and thicken/darken the brows up. The L’Oreal Paris Brow Artist Plumper is my favourite product not only for thickening and darkening, but for keeping the crazy caterpillars in place!

Lashes longer than your arms! Well that’s what I strive for anyway.

A lengthening mascara is what you want for a natural look, using a volumising mascara can often look overboard – so stick to a product that seperates, lengthens and curls! To achieve this, the Benefit Roller Lash is your best friend.

In reference back to my comment discussing Peach being the perfect summer cheek colour, I think that also applies for the perfect summer lip colour. Peach is incredibly wearable and very flattering against tanned skin, making it a winner to tie the whole look together.

Over the last couple of months, I went on a hunt for the ultimate peach satin lippy. After weeks of swatching in and out of Mecca, M.A.C and Farmers stores, I finally found ‘the one’.

The Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Volupte in 13 Peach Passion was the most stunning shade of peach that I came across, not to mention the beautiful formula of these incredibly hydrating satin lipsticks and the impressive level of pigmentation that they give on the lips – they also smell like watermelon!

I hope this post was helpful to those looking for the perfect products to endure those heated afternoons!
